Laborers For The Harvests

It is harvest time in many parts of the world. It is the time of in-gathering of ripened crops. The result of all of the hard, summer work has now changed to autumn work. There is corn, wheat, barley, squash, and pumpkins to name a few crops being harvested. It is a time when most farmers realize how much yield his field produced.

Most of you Christians out there know well that the same is happening with regards to the Kingdom of God. God is harvesting His field! And God is looking for laborers to go out into it and work. He is making sure that it will be a great harvest. Many of you have the same heart for doing likewise. Others of you may not. Why?

Yes, a spiritual harvesting is going on:

“Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” (John 4:35).

There is a sense of urgency at harvest time. Nothing else takes higher priority. God wants to open our eyes to see the harvest the way He does.

How does God want us to see His harvest? He wants us to see that the time is now to take action:

Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. (Ecclesiastes 11:4)

When it comes to harvesting, there is no perfect time, no perfect condition, as to when to start taking risks in going out into the field. Now is not the time to be just thinking about getting it done.

And, yes, there is a Lord of the harvest:

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvestto send out workers into his harvest field.”  (Matthew.9:37-38)

The field belongs to God, not to us. He is called “the Lord of the harvest.” How did the field become ripe in the first place? How did it become ready for harvest? God was behind it, of course. It took His watering, fertilizing, weeding and watering again and again for the crop to grow. A seed was sown into a person, spiritually. This watering, fertilizing occurred when God brought relevant trials, struggles, circumstances and experiences to him. God may have had someone else come along and make a Godly impact and impression on him. The Holy Spirit then moved, influenced and inspired the individual until, in due season, the person became ripe. God now has him ready to be reaped, not into a physical barn or silo, of course, but into a body of believers.

This reaping occurs when this person repents, is baptized and becomes a disciple of Jesus Christ, a part of His body, the Church. He becomes what the Bible calls, a called out one – a saint (1 Corinthians 1:2). The person has been “born again.” This is how a ripe person is harvested. This is why laborers are sent into the field.

The question is: How are the laborers to know which plants are the ripe ones in the first place? Which crops are ready to be reaped? At first glance, ripeness is usually difficult to recognize. But, it must be noted that harvesting is primarily, once again, the work of the Holy Spirit and He leads Christians, who care, as to where and how to do it.

This is important because God doesn’t want the harvest worked on by careless, uninterested workers. He, therefore, trains His workers and sends them out. He gives them tools – spiritual gifts. These are God’s harvest-workers, the laborers. They are the lights of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). These include the evangelists, the ones who witness Christ to others, the missionaries. These are the ones who are not ashamed of speaking about Jesus Christ before men. It is the laborer, for example, who invites a person to a Church service and the person says, “Yes, I’ll go.” It is by the work of these laborers that a ripe person identifies himself!  The ripe person is the one who responds to the reaper – the one taking initiative and showing the person the gospel of salvation.

What is being harvested by God? Again, let me repeat, the harvest field consists of those God has been drawing and calling to become members of the Body of Christ, the Church. The harvest includes the Old Testament saints and those who throughout history have been part of the New Testament Church Jesus founded and started on the Day of Pentecost and up until now. Today the harvesting continues ….

But wait! There are other laborers needed to tend to the saints and prepare them for yet another future harvest! These laborers are to edify the saints. They are to feed them by teaching, encouraging, praying, guiding, sharing and loving them. These laborers are the saints, both you and me, who work in the Body of Christ Jesus until He returns.  The saints will then be resurrected to eternal life as immortal, spirit beings  – the next harvest! The laborers of that future harvest will be Jesus Christ and the angels (1 Thessalonians 4:13 – 17) (Matthew 13:37-39).

In the meantime, what does Christ now ask us to do?

Pray that there would be laborers for the harvest.
(Matthew 23:23)

Did you catch that? Christ wants us to at least PRAY! Pray for workers to come in. Where are the laborers? There is need for more laborers or much of the harvest will be lost. Many of you know who you are! You know your calling! You know your skills!

The harvest will not occur if we Christians stay home and do not go out into the fields! We, (and I include myself!), tend to want to be comfortable where we are – in a retirement mode; not wanting to make any further effort. If the harvest seems small to us, is it because there aren’t enough workers out in the field? Again, laborers are needed out there! The job will not get done by itself.

To many Christians, Jesus Christ, after He returns, will say, “I never knew you… you workers of iniquity.” ( Matthew 7:23)  These were not the true laborers! These “Christians” were not willing to use the gift(s) they had been given to use  the way God wanted  for the task at hand.  All of us have a job to do. You will be amazed at what can be accomplished as you labor with the Holy Spirit. I believe it will indeed be a great and wonderful harvest! Don’t be left out!  Therefore …..

Be laborers for Jesus Christ!!!
Get off the rocking chair!
Get your back up off the wall!
Get your tail in gear!
Get the show on the road!
Get on the groove!
Get a move on!

Get Down On It
-sung by Kool and the Gang

What you gonna do? You want to get down?
What you gonna do? Do you want to get down? Tell me.
What you gonna do? Do you want to get down?
What you gonna do? Do you want to get down?

Get your back up off the wall!
Dance! Come on! Get your back up off the wall!
Dance! Come on!  (2X)

Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it – get down on it, come on and
Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it – get down on it.

How you gonna do it if you really don’t want to dance
By standing on the wall? Get your back up off the wall!
So tell me.
How you gonna do it if you really don’t want to dance
By standing on the wall. Get your back up off the wall!
‘Cause I heard all the people sayin’:

Get down on it – come on and get down on it – if you really want it
Get down on it – you gotta feel it
Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it – come on and get down on it
Baby, baby, get on it – get down on it.

I say people – what? What you gonna do?
You’ve gotta get on the groove, if you want your body to move.
Tell me baby.

How you gonna do it if you really don’t want to dance
By standing on the wall? Get your back up off the wall!
So tell me.
How you gonna do it if you really won’t take a chance
While standing on the wall? Get your back up off the wall!
‘Cause I heard all the people sayin’:

Get down on it – come on and get down on it – if you really want it
Get down on it – you gotta feel it
Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it – come on and get down on it
Baby, baby, get down on it – get on it –  get down on it.

What you gonna do? – Do you want to get down?
What you gonna do? – Get your back up off the wall!
Dance! Come on! Get your back up off the wall!
Dance! Come on!

Get your back up off the wall!
Dance! Come on! (2X)

(Guitar-piano synthesizer)

Get your back up off the wall!

Because you know it, when you’re dancing, yeah.
You show it, as you move, move, move.
You know it, when you’re dancing, yeah.
You show it, as you move across the floor.

Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it
Get down on it – get down on it – get down on it
Get down on it – get down on it
