Our Great God

This song is one I have enjoyed for quite some time now, since I first heard it on the radio about year or so ago.

It sings of who God is, and calls all of creation to praise His name. I pray it will uplift you in your walk with Our Great God.

Now, according to an interview he gave on Suite101, Mr. Ortega said this about this song:

“I co-wrote ‘Our Great God’ around 2000 with Mac Powell, who is the lead singer of the Christian rock band Third Day. He wrote the music and one line of the song, and asked me to supply the rest of the words. We completed it by passing CDs back and forth in the mail. Then, it ended up being a pretty successful song for me, since a lot of churches picked it up and started using it as a regular hymn on Sundays. I was thrilled about that,” Ortega says.”  (Suite101: Interview with Fernando Ortega)

The only part of the song I had a little difficulty was with the words: “Mysterious and unknown”.  What do these words mean?  I must give the writers the benefit of the doubt that they wanted to convey that God works in mysterious ways and that there is much more still to learn about Him in this present life. Enjoy.

Our Great God  (2000)
– sung by Fernando Ortega
– composed by Fernando Ortega & Mac Powell
– album: O Come O Love Divine

Eternal God, unchanging
Mysterious and unknown
Your boundless love, unfailing
In grace and mercy shown.

Bright seraphim in endless flight
Around Your glorious throne
They raise their voices day and night
In praise to You alone.

Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!
Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!

Lord, we are weak and frail
Helpless in the storm
Surround us with your angels
Hold us in your arms
Our cold and ruthless enemy,
His pleasure is our harm
Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee
Before our sovereign God.

Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!
Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!

Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird
Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth
Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe
Sing praises to the living God,
Who rules them by His word!

Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!
Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!

Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!
Hallelujah, glory be to Our Great God!
