The Value Of God’s Dreams

Dreams Road SignIn last week’s post about The Annunciation (March 26 – click here), I mentioned in some detail, how God communicates to people in making His plans known. God sometimes uses angels and sometimes He uses dreams that people have as they sleep.

Dreams is what I want to focus my attention in this article. Contrary to modern man’s thoughts and opinions, I believe God still uses dreams today as a valuable medium to reach people. Here are my thoughts on this.

In ancient times, as recorded in the Bible, we see God using dreams with those He was using. Here are some examples:

1) Joseph, Jacob’s son, had dreams which he conveyed to his brothers which got him into a lot of trouble (Genesis 37).

2) Later on, this same Joseph was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine (Genesis 41).

3) The prophet Daniel interpreted Nebuchanezzar’s dream about a very tall image made of gold, silver, bronze, iron and clay. The interpretation of that dream is still relative to our day and to the last days (Daniel 2).

4)  While Jesus Christ was being held prisoner, Pilate’s wife became visibly shaken after having a dream about Jesus (Matthew 27:19).

Dreams today, for the most part, have been downplayed to be some sort of Freudian emotional phenomena that happens in our minds to be easily dismissed and forgotten.

But I want to emphasize to any of you who is willing to read further, that dreams are today being used by God to communicate to people. If you are not a Christian and have doubts and disbeliefs at the claims Christians have made regarding their beliefs, please read on.

I am already hearing of many instances where individuals in highly non-Christian areas such as the Middle East and the Far East are becoming Christians after having a dream relating to Jesus Christ. I have heard these people, before having this encounter, say they had been talking to believers, or were working against them, when they had a dream which convicted them that Christ was communicating with them.

You may right now be totally against Christianity. You may be antagonistic and full of venom against the Christian religion. But let me tell you this, Christianity is not a religion. It is a way of life and it is the way, the only way to salvation. You may not agree with that statement, but that is my conviction on this matter.

You may disagree there is a God, that He exists and that He has control over all of the universe, but that position may take a dramatic turn for you when you have a dream that will make a deep impression on you. It will be a dream God will be involved in because He has planted within you a mission, a calling, for you to do something. You will stop everything you may be working on because that dream weighs strongly on your mind.

Joseph and Pharaoh

Just as Pharaoh stopped everything he was doing and sought to find answers to his dreams, the same just may happen to you. Follow up on what has just occurred in your life.

You may or may not need to seek an interpretor to make sense of the dream you may have had that is puzzling you. As soon as you awake from this type of  dream, you will know immediately it is from God and what it all means.

Others of you may need to seek help. Ask a Christian person you know and trust, a Christian pastor, for example, to help you along. All I will say is for you to not to ignore it. When you persue it, the result will be days filled with excitement and with challenges – whatever God has in store for you. Yes, that will be an indication, if you are an unbeliever, that the God of the Bible does exist and that you may need to seriously make some decisions.

You may be a Christian missionary and may be questioning why everything seems to have spiritually stalled. Then you have a dream that seems to have given you the answers. Follow through on it. You will somehow get confirmation as to the soundness of the solutions.

I am aware that there are many websites that were established to supposedly help you interpret dreams. They will attempt to dissect your dreams into symbols and apply meanings to them. Well, I would not place heavy credence on them. Instead, give your thoughts over to this God who is now trying to communicate with you. Then seek help by personally connecting with someone you know and trust.

Yes, I know what some of you may also be asking: Does not the Bible deal with other ways God communicates to people? Does not God also use visions? Yes! Paul had visions as did Peter and John. The Bible also specifically says this would be a case – but not the only case. How?

It was predicted in advance that the Holy Spirit would be poured out to mankind. The result was that the children of God, Christians, will not only have visions but also have dreams – dreams from God.

In Joel 2:28, it says:

And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.

Many Bible students believe this occurred on the Day of Pentecost, but this may also indicate a future time period as well.  And what is important here, once again, is that dreams are strongly to be considered today as a significant tool that God uses in communicating His plans to people in advancing His name and gospel throughout the world.

Let me admit to you now, that I have not written anything in this blog website as a response to a dream. As far as I know, I did not have any dreams whatsoever while I slept that came from God. Much of what I have written on the internet here has been through my thoughts, meditations and circumstances that have occurred in my life that I believe have come from God and have had profound impact on me. Most of the dreams I have ever had, I have forgotten. It does not mean, however, I may never have a dream that comes from God in the future. How about you?

You know who you are out there if you have experienced an unusual dream(s) that is stirring you right now. Again, let me admonish you to follow up on it. God just may be giving you a short-term task, a lifetime assignment, or a calling for you, of helping your people, your culture, your race, your community, your congregation, your family, your city, or your country to receive and understand who Jesus Christ is and what He can do for them now and in the furure.

May God be with you all.
