Losing My Religion

Music HighwayHave you lost your religion? If you define religion as an organized attempt to impose trite rules and regulations in the name of God onto man, then maybe it is good you have left it.

This kind of religion has a tendency of dominating and controlling people rather than letting God have them be empowered to be free and to mature for ministry for others.

Many have left God, Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of a church because of the teachings, antics and behavior of those who each calls himself the voice of God.

If you have become disenchanted with them, remember that Jesus Christ knew these type of religious leaders. They were the Scribes and Pharisees of His day.

Sadly, many people have left religion and with it, their faith in God and His Word, the Bible. What religion says (I am here referring to the Christian religion) and what God says often do not agree. Therefore, if you have lost your faith because of this or any other reason, I want to let you know that God is still on His throne aware and watching over His church. And Jesus Christ is ministering to the hurting who were previously under those who did not understand or care.

Those of you who are considering leaving religion, please continue loving God for He still loves you. He has not left nor abandoned you. Do not abandon Him. If you believe your life has been taken away because of religion, here is a quote that I recently read on a classroom wall:

If you have lost, you are not finished.

God is still working on your behalf (Philippians 1:6). His plan for you has not changed. He still is maintaing a place for you for all eternity. That position started when you became a part His family.

Anyway, I have no idea what the YouTube video song, Losing My Religion, below is all about. The lyrics come across as confusing to me. If the singer is “losing his religion,” why does he not clearly tell others why? What do you think this song means?

It has a great melody with very entertaining playing of the mandolin. I enjoyed singing it years ago – without understanding it – when I was removing myself from the legalism of the church I used to be in.

single – Losing My Religion (1991)
album – Out Of TimeĀ  (1991)

Oh life, it’s bigger
It’s bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I set it up

Album – Out Of Time

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour
I’m choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool,
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I set it up

Consider this
Consider this, the hint of the century
Consider this, the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I’ve said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
Try, cry, why try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream
