Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Music HighwayWorry, as you may know, is an unpleasant human emotion that many, if not all of us, much understand.

If you are a parent, you know the feeling when your son or daughter is still not home after a designated time curfew on a Saturday night.

As a home owner, it is easy to start worrying after a job loss and be thinking how to make mortgage payments.

Worry is a universal and common symptom that we humans often have to contend with.

Yet, Jesus Christ tells us never to worry about what tomorrow may bring. How can we, being highly dependent on others and circumstances, do this?

Jesus mentions worry in Matthew 6:25-27:

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

What is fascinating about this passage is that Jesus Christ spoke it to His disciples and to a crowd of followers on a mountain (Matthew 5:1). In this setting He told them, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13)  and “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). Did they fully understand those words at that moment? Perhaps not.

We Christians, however, do understand them today. Is it easy to stop worrying and have our thoughts on a kingdom?  At first, I believe, it is not so easy. Some of us never find it simple. Yet, we need to have our hearts focused on Christ.

AND….AND….and ….AND we need to understand, of course, that not worrying and just being content will not pay the bills. We cannot stop worrying and ignore looking for ways to pay them. Not worrying will not feed us if we are not asking God and then exploring ways to get provisions.

Now if you are at a loss as what to do in a tough situation, we are to ask God what needs to be asked, seek what needs to be sought and knock on the doors that need to be knocked (Matthew 7:7 same setting!). What will bring results? Answer: Keeping active and trusting God instead of worrying.

A robin with worms; perhaps to feed its young.

Even birds of the air that Jesus speaks about, constantly seek and move around and “find” the God-given meals. Worms do not fall from heaven right in front of birds (although we may never know otherwise). But God makes sure worms are near enough for them to see and go after.

Rarely do provisions from God come down to people directly from heaven. But here are examples when it did occur:

1) Manna from heaven fed the ancient Israelites as they sojourned in the desert.

2) Ravens fed Elijah during a time of famine (1 Kings 17:1-7 NKJV).

3) Angels ministered to Jesus after He fasted 40 days in the desert (Matthew 4:11).

The opposite of worry is peace, calmness, confidence with contentment.

So, what should we do instead of worrying?

a) Pray. Prayer changes things. It helps you go through those moments that tempt and beckon you to worry.

b) Take heart that God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

c) Turn your eyes upon Jesus Christ.

With all that in mind, as you sing the YouTube video below, you can alter the lyrics to:

1) “Don’t worry, do something.”    and/or…

2) “Don’t worry, trust Jesus.”

Worry is a burden that God never meant for us to bear. –WIHS 104.9 FM, Thought For Today (part 3)

Here is a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry, be happy
imageIn every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy……

Ain’t got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don’t worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry, be happy
Look at me I am happy
Don’t worry, be happy

Here I give you my phone number
When you worry, call me
I make you happy
Don’t worry, be happy
Ain’t got no cash, ain’t got no style
Ain’t got no gal to make you smile
But don’t worry, be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy …..

Don’t worry, be happy……
Don’t worry don’t do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don’t bring everybody down like this
Don’t worry, it will soon past
Whatever it is
Don’t worry, be happy
