We Shall Overcome

Music HighwayIn John 16:33 Jesus Christ said:

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (KJV)

Just what did Jesus mean when He said, “I have overcome the world“? Much has been written about overcoming. And what He said should give us Christians much to cheer about. We are to be joyful, glad and full of peace because of what He has done for us. Let the Holy Spirit help and guide us to fully appreciate what Christ has done.

It is difficult overcoming this world. There is much pain, anguish and toil that we Christians must go through, must overcome. I do not mean to sound overly pessimistic but  just as a rose has its thorns, so does our journey as a Christian contain one trial after another until death. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ overcame the world. And He has not forsaken us.

In the meantime, as God gives us opportunity, we can make certain “demands” (have a voice) on the world’s stage for the civil liberties, justice and freedom for the unborn, the homeless, the poor, the helpless and the persecuted Christian brothers and sisters among us. These all have much to overcome.

During the days of the civil rights movement in America in the 1960’s, Dr. Martin Luther King proclaimed that in his country that has prided herself in her liberty – many fighting and dying to defend it – there was still much prejudice, hatred, and injustice against his race. Most Americans, during the early portion of that decade, were mostly indifferent to the daily adverse conditions of those US citizens. It took Dr. King’s strong voice and actions to bring about unprecedented change for the better. But there is still much to overcome. And, because Jesus Christ is soon coming, they also shall overcome.

We Christians know all too well that with Satan, our human nature and the way of the world against us, true freedom will never occur in this age. This is true. Nevertheless, we are to sing that one day we shall overcome the world; someday we will all be free. We shall overcome someday. Soon. But now, for the moment, only in Jesus Christ can we be spiritually free.

As you view the two (2) YouTube videos below, and as the Christian spring holy season approaches, let us Christians contemplate and review how Jesus Christ overcame the world so that we also can one day victoriously overcome on the day He returns.

genre – Spiritual, Protest/Activist song

Deep in my heart
I do believe
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free

I may not know
How long ’twill be
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free

Hold on my brother
Give me your hand
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free

Learning to love
We’ll find a way
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free

We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome someday

We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
Someday we’ll all be free
Someday we’ll all be free
We shall overcome someday

The words of Martin Luther King are just the tip of the iceberg of those expressed by martyred Christians over the centuries:
