Voulez-Vous (Do You Want)

Music HighwayWhat do people want? I guess they mostly want what they do not have. They also want to maintain what they already possess. This is true with those living in the United States and several other countries.

This country, the US, will soon celebrate another birthday which is a day many of us citizens  (I wish all of us) stop to reflect on the freedoms that the forefathers of the country wanted to fulfill and the “unalienable rights” which their Declaration of Indepedance says has been given to all human beings.

They wanted freedom of religion.
They wanted freedom from tyranny.
They wanted freedom from oppression.
They wanted freedom from over-taxation. (We are still working on this one, folks!)

So, que voulez-vous? What do you want? That is want I want to discuss.

                                    Maslov’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

I remember in high school studying in class the “Hierarchy of Needs” created by Abraham Maslov (1908 – 1970). He believed that supposedly most, if not all, human beings on the face of the planet have a progressive hierarchy of needs, wants and desires in life.

If I remember well, the base of the pyramid is widest because all of the inhabitants of this earth there begin focusing and highly pursuing their basic primary and physical  (physiological) needs. This pyramid triangle tries to explain the reason, for example, why many, many people have to work twelve or more long hours a day, six to seven days a week, just to provide for themselves and their families.

But, after the basic physiological needs are met, according to this theoretical pyramid of needs model, the focus of individuals then goes up to a higher level. They then will desire to protect their sources and abilities to obtain food, shelter and clothing. Since the second level from the bottom is smaller, this indicates that not all people from the base level have reached this higher level.

MicrophoneThe top area of the model represents those who are “satisfied” and no longer are mainly concentrating on the “lower needs” but are now realizing self-fulfillment (should they have more time – 😀 ). They have supposedly arrived at a situation where they can become highly philanthropic in nature. Those in this level would be seen as artists, inventors and composers. Many here desire to be famous. You would see people here being politicians, being involved in charities and promoting civil rights – just to name a few.

I guess this model has its place and value to a large extent in the world of sociology, psychology and counseling, but for me, as a Christian, (and these are just my thoughts), this model has some weaknesses. The weaknesses? You guessed it –  in the spiritual areas of human need and fulfillment.

Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, man’s greatest need has been God. And as soon as you believe in Him, especially in Jesus Christ, you as a Christian will have all your needs met – sooner or later and forever- guaranteed (Matthew 6:33).

As Christians in the body of Christ, you have been given spiritual gifts which, when realized, developed and used, unlike Maslov’s Pyramid, quickly catapults you to the top regions of accomplishment – no matter what socioeconomic status you may presently be in.

Your morality level as a Christian is refined by Christ, by His Word, and by your spiritual brothers and sisters who are there to edify you. It is not governed by self fulfillment of wants and needs since Christians believe they have a Provider, God the Father, and Jesus Christ, His Son.

As a believer in God, especially as a Christian, you have (or should have) faith. Therefore:

1)  Your need-to-be-in-family desires are met. You are in the family of God (1 Thessalonians 4:10;  1 Peter 2:17).

2) Self esteem issues are (or should be) settled as several Bible passages indicate (Philippians 2:3-4; Mark 12:30-31)

3) Your safety needs are met by God. Your sense of security are met by trusting in Him (2 Samuel 22:3; 2 Thessalonians 3:3).

4) Your self expression needs are met as you compose spiritual hymns and songs, become missionaries, serve Christians being DJ’s in Christian radio stations, etc.

When needs are not being met by your Christian brethren; when Christians are not loving one another as Jesus Christ commanded us to do, the church becomes weak and less effective in witnessing the gospel.

But, if you are not a Christian, what do you want? Que voulez-vous? First accept Jesus Christ and soon you will soar higher and well above all mountains, treetops and pyramids of needs.

Did you ever want to have a money tree in your backyard or in your place of residence? Maybe God will create one for you in the next life – just for the heck of it.

Que voulez-vous? Money, fame, health? Seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).

If you are a church leader, what do you want for your flock? Church programs? More monetary donations? More church buildings? My answer, I know many will disagree, is desire to first build up each sheep of the flock – not build new church buildings, campuses or chapels. The world has enough cathedrals! (Future blog here!)

As Christians, what ELSE do you want? Que voulez-vous?

Immortality? We already possess it. (John 6:47; 1 Corinthians 15:22;)

Material wealth? We have already been promised treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21)

Freedom? You already have it. The truth (John 8:32; Galatians 5:13)

Comfort during difficult times? The Holy Spirit (John 14:16)

Forgiveness?  Done.  (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:13-14)

Forgiveness? The cross and the resurrection of Christ has dealt with that.

Health? If not now, when Christ returns. There will be no more sickness, but eternal “youth” whatever that will mean in the next life since there will be no aging of anyone ever again. It is assured.

Love. You have it now from God. (John 3:16; Galatians 2:20)

A bright future? Yes! Praise the Lord!

Do you want to own a stretch limosine but can’t because you can’t afford one and your garage is too small? Maybe stretch limousines will still be around in the kingdom to come.

What do I want? Que voulez-moi?

I want world peace.

I want no more terrorism against others.

I want no more death.

I want to learn more about God.

I want to see the universe.

Let me repeat, all our needs and wants (if they are reasonable before God) will be perfectly fulfilled when Jesus Christ returns to this earth and establishes His magnificent Kingdom for all to see, experience, live, and enjoy.

With that in mind, right now, at this moment, I just want to play the YouTube video song below entitled, Voulez-Vous, disregard the lyrics and just dance!  Turn up the volume!!  CRANK IT UP!!!

People everywhere
A sense of expectation hanging in the air
Giving out a spark
Across the room your eyes are glowing in the dark
And here we go again, we know the start, we know the end
Masters of the scene
We’ve done this all before and now we’re back to get some more
You know what I mean

Abba Voulez-vous

12 inch disco single

Voulez-vous (ah-ha)
Take it now or leave it (ah-ha)
Now it’s all we get (ah-ha)
Nothing promised, no regrets
Voulez-vous (ah-ha)
Ain’t no big decision (ah-ha)
You know what to do (ah-ha)
La question c’est voulez-vous
Voulez-vous

[interlude]

I know what you think
The girl means business so I’ll offer her a drink
Looking mighty proud
I see you leave your table, pushing through the crowd
I’m really glad you came, you know the rules, you know the game
Master of the scene
We’ve done it all before and now we’re back to get some more
You know what I mean
