Our Daily Bread – September 2016

ODB September 2016Here is this month’s September 2016, promotional commentary of the monthly devotional called Our Daily Bread. This publication has been around for 58 years. It was first published in April 1956.

It includes articles related to the Bible and Christian living, a daily Bible reading, an article about the Bible reading and an insight about the passage. It also gives you scriptures so you can read the entire Bible in one year. In other words, it is a treasure to help you in your daily growth with Jesus Christ, your Savior.

Below is a list of the titles of the daily articles from this month’s (September) booklet. Underneath each are my personal brief thoughts about the article.

September 1, 2016  “Because You Prayed”
All of us are besieged with events that cause our thoughts to want to worry. Praying to God when this happens is the best thing you can do! Read this article and learn why!

September 2, 2016  How to Carve a Duck
Although we are God’s creation, He has not finished creating us – creating what He wants us to ultimately become. Reading this message will just lead you to praise God!

September 3, 2016  Good Imitation
The Bible says we are to be like Christ. It says we are to become like Him, walk with Him, thonk like Him, etc. This article therefore, shows how best to imitate the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

September 4, 2016   Doing What He Says
Reading this day’s devotional reminded me of the words of Jesus when He said:

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? (Matt. 7:3)

This day’s Our Daily Bread entry is required reading.

September 5, 2016  A Bubble Break
This day’s message states how bubbles can help you in life! No, I’m just kidding. But the article does focus on what is really important. And it is not bubbles found in wine.

September 6, 2016   Graded With Grace
After reading this day’s devotional, I began to realize just why God offers grace.  Answer: Because eternity is at stake! Read more about God’s grace here!

September 7, 2016  She Did What She Could
There is so much that can be done to help this hurting world. Yet, we are overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness at times. This day’s message is not about fretting over what we cannot change, but about how God’s word can ease our burdens so that we can prepare to do His will.

Passion and Purity bookSeptember 8, 2016  Everything Comes from God
If we could remember the stewardship values described in this article, we will be highly pleasing as parts of the temple of the living God.

September 9, 2016   What Matters Most
The inhabitants of this world, for the most part, are absorbed with what they perceive as important. But what matters most you can read about in this day’s message.

September 10, 2016   Evie’s Decision
Being evangelical, witnessing God’s gospel, is not just for evangelists! By meditating on this day’s devotional, you will be delighted to know more about delivering God’s message of love and hope to a forsaken world.

September 11, 2016   Emergency Prayer
I have watched countless movies where the main character was in very dangerous predicaments. He would be shot at, car chased, and ambushed. But I have never seen that particular character kneeling and praying to God for help during these emergency scenarios. I guess it would not improve the movie’s ratings. Anyway, this day’s article is about praying during crisis situations. A great read here.

Knowing the Truth of God's Love

September 12, 2016   Ready for the Wedding
We Christians are intrigued when we read about Christ’s parable about the church – especially the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Five of these women, as you know, were foolish. The author of this devotional message discusses this parable and its implication for us.

September 13, 2016   Ready for a Change?
This great article covers two topics in one devotional! One is self-control in overcoming. The second is what it means to walk in the spirit. (Galatians 5:16) Wow!

September 14, 2016   Beyond Time
Jesus Christ cannot be compared with William Shakespeare. Christ was (and still is) a man for all time and for all eternity. Why is this? Clue: It has to do with Him being the Bread of Life. Read more about this here.

September 15, 2016  Helping Each Other
Why is Jesus the Head of the Church while the Church is the Body of Christ? What does all this mean and how does the body respond to the Head? All this and more is found in this day’s reading.

September 16, 2016   A Pleasing Aroma
This day’s devotional is about fragrances and perfumes. They are separately mentioned in the bible as well as in secular history. This article is basically about your fragrance to God and God being the Perfumer. There is much insight to grasp here.

September 17, 2016  The Survival Float
Surviving the stresses of life can leave us emotionally drained and weak – physically, emotionally and spiritually. This day’s article is about how to stay afloat and remain steadfast with God. A great article.

September 18, 2016   Making Preparations
Can we prepare for eternity? If so, when should we start? This day’s message explains.

This day’s devotional proved to me that you tend to become what you most often think about. Wow! Then it discusses what we should focus more on. What?! You better read this.

September 20, 2016   Connecting the Dots
Most of us have seen newspaper images made entirely of dots. When we look close up, we do not see much, but from a distance the image quickly makes sense. So it is with the Bible. Learn the best way to connect the dots of Scripture by reading this.

September 21, 2016   Fiery Trials
When I first accepted Christ, I believed that life as a Christian would always be happy go-lucky. But then I experienced and learned, first hand, the fiery trials. This day’s article tells us that these trials are vitally important and necessary for Christians! What?! You will do well to read this.

Jaffa Gate Jerusalem

Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem

September 22, 2016  The Gates of Worship
Psalm 100:4 declares that we are to “enter [God’s] gates with thanksgiving.” What are these gates? This day’s reading elaborates. Also, the Insight portion of this day’s devotional states that this psalm, Psalm 100, is rich with imagery. What are some of them? Read this day’s devotional and find out.

September 23, 2016   Words for the Weary
This day’s message expounds on Isaiah 50:4 where it says, “the Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue.” Does the tongue of man have a brain that it can learn? How is it “well instructed”? And how is this beneficial for others? Learn about this here!

September 24, 2016  Pass It On
This day’s article states that we Christians are in a relay race and must pass the baton forward. What is this baton and what is being passed on? Read about them here.

September 28, 2016   Praying For You Today

September 29, 2016   Within A Stone’s Throw
What does receiving God’s grace mean? I could say more here, but this day’s reading says it better than I ever could. Please read this! It will make your day!

September 30, 2016   Bad Faith, Good Faith
I have always believed that faith is always good, but this article states there is also “bad faith”! What is bad faith? What is the difference?

Is the YouTube video song below an example of bad faith? As you read through the lyrics ask yourself these questions: Was the singer seeking a higher faith, a better faith, a faith from God? Was he showing signs of repentance from his lustful lifestyle? Maybe yes, maybe no. But he did express a desire for something more. What does the singer mean by “you gotta have faith”? Whatever he means, here is a great opportunity where a Christian, responding to someone singing a song similar to this one can witness Jesus Christ and express to him the true meaning of faith.
