Born Again

Music HighwayThese months of the year, July- August – September, have been historical in my life. I was born in July, married in September, and baptized a Christian in August.

It was on August 25th when I got baptized as a born again believer into the body of Christ. I remember that day. It was a Saturday. The baptismal ceremony consisted of me being immersed in a metal horse watering trough in the basement of a church member’s home.

The one thing I especially remembered that day was having a splitting, nagging headache that began early and stayed with me the entire day. I was not prone to having headaches unless I was sick with the flu or something. I thought I was coming down with a cold, but it never developed.

Perhaps my headache was due to my thoughts on the intensity of the baptismal situation of that moment in my life. Here I was, raised in a Catholic home, infant baptized by Catholic family members, and now, just finishing high school, was being baptized by members of a different, non-Catholic, Christian church without my parents’ presence, without their knowledge.

What I did not realize was that on that day in August, I had already been born again. I now believe that becoming born again occurs as soon as you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. I did this a few months earlier in the month of May of that year. But I did not believe at the time of my baptism that I had already experienced a spiritual rebirth.

I literally believed back then that becoming born again in the spirit occurs when you enter the Kingdom of God AFTER Jesus returned to earth, never before.

It was not until a few years later that I understood what being born again (regeneration) was all about. Baptism, as many of you understand, symbolizes the death and resurrection into a new life. But prior to that, becoming born again is a conviction of the heart that Jesus Christ is your Savior and not the world. I had believed the process to be different than that.

fetus

Becoming born again does not mean spiritually becoming a fetus again. A fetus never develops awareness of his parents and his surroundings. Unlike a newborn child, a “spiritual fetus” would never be aware of his spiritual Father God in heaven.

You, as a Christian, are not, as I used to believe, a “spiritual fetus” waiting to be brought forth into immortal (“born again”) life after enduring “labor pains” of the last days of tribulation on earth or after a physical death and a resurrection at Christ’s return. That was not true.

No human fetus ever develops consciousness or awareness of his environment prior to his birth, but a newly born child soon does.

Spiritually, I am now a born again child of God, not an unborn fetus of God. Christ was telling Nicodemus in John 3:6-8 that in order to understand the spiritual things of God NOW, you must be born again.

By the way, according to Barclay, the concept of being born again was not a new idea. It was already believed by the Jews in New Testament times.

The Jews knew about rebirth. When a man from another faith became a Jew and had been accepted into Judaism by prayer and sacrifice and baptism, he was regarded as being reborn.
(Barclay, William. The Daily Study Bible Series: The Gospel of John, Vol. 1, p 126, Philadelphia, PA: Westminster, 1975 .)

Unlike a fleshly fetus, a Christian who is spiritually born again begins to deeply learn and grasp the spiritual things of God because he is fully aware of who he is now and is fully interacting with his spiritual Father God in heaven.

This simple truth, this mighty doctrine, creates a joyful state of mind, a restful spiritual mindset that causes no unnecessary sweating or painful headaches.

Praise the Lord.

LYRICS

Chorus
Lord I’ve (I’ve been born again)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)
Lord I’ve (I’ve been born again)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)
Do you know that I’ve been (to the river)
And I’ve been (baptized)
My soul (converted)
And I feel alright that’s the reason (I’ve been born)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)

Oh you know Jesus my Lord
I sure do love Your name.
Your name is all I trust my Lord.
And if You hadn’t died
My soul would not be saved.
That’s the reason I been born again.

Repeat Chorus

Well I went in the valley,
I didn’t go to stay.
My soul got happy and I stayed all day.
Jesus picked me up, and He turned me around, around
He placed my feet down on unchanging ground
Well I been to the river and I been baptized
My soul is anchored in Jesus and I feel alright
Well He helps me in the morning
And He helps me in the noon
And He helps me in the evening
And He will help you too.

Yea I’ve (I’ve been born again)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)
Sure I’ve (I’ve been born again)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)
Do you know that I’ve been (to the river)
And I’ve been (baptized)
My soul (converted)
And I feel alright that’s the reason (I’ve been born)
I’ve been born again (I’ve been born again)

He picked me up,  He turned me around
He picked me up
I’ve been born again
I’ve been born again
I’ve been born again
