United We Stand

Music HighwayJesus Christ once said:

A divided kingdom ends in ruin. A city or home divided against itself cannot stand.
Matthew 12:25
(TLB)

In my previous post, 30 Prayer Days to the United States Presidential Election, I presented a 30-day program for prayer before the coming November 8th election in the United States. Why? Because I believe this country, the United States, is at a crossroads rarely seen in her history.

This nation is currently facing important issues such as: economic development, immigration reform, Supreme Court addition, and foreign policy initiatives. Yet this country is nearly divided in half regarding these and other issues. Most of you who live here in this country see full well the riots in the cities, the disintegration of families and the corruption of justice. Some of you may disagree with what I have just said and say progress has already been made, why the fuss?

My main point is that the major social issue the United States is facing today it that of unity. We the citizens of this country are not united as we should be.

Many of you are now sensing – more than ever before – that now is the time for the nation of America to pull herself together.  Unity is still possible to some extent. Nevertheless, we – especially Christian citizens – must remember there is a Satan and fallen angels who will always cause problems. The context surrounding the Bible passage above is about Satan and his demons and the cause of division.

Anyway, I was recently reading Ephesians 4:1-14  and especially noted what it had to say to the Church about unity. For the Church there is:

unity-which-glorifies

The point of your life is to point to Him” – WIHS 104.9 FM Thought For Today quote that unifies brethren.

1) one body (Eph. 4:4)

2) one Spirit (Eph. 4:4)

3) one hope (Eph. 4:4)

4) one Lord (Eph. 4:5)

5) one faith (Eph. 4:5)

6) one baptism (Eph. 4:5)

7) one God (Eph. 4:6)

8) one Father of all (Eph. 4:6)

This list describes the reality that unity is indeed the foundation of our walk with Christ.

But has the Church, through the ages, been perfect in unity? Sadly, the answer is no. We have seen too much disagreement in the Church. We have seen too many denominational splits from congregations. We have seen too much division due to theological doctrines. We have seen too many Churches fall apart over controversial decisions where there is disagreement with Paul’s teachings found in the Bible.

BUT, I was encouraged when I continued reading  in the same chapter 4 of Ephesians:

Verse 11, It was he who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers…”

Jesus Christ, in a way “divided” [I use caution saying this] the Church. How? Some of the brethren are called to preach, some are to teach, others to prophesy, etc. Why? To edify, not divide, the saints – to equip, not dismantle, the brethren. Therefore, there is necessary diversity in the Church just as there is beneficial diversity in a country, such as the United States.

Was the Church fully united in Paul’s day? Is it completely united today? Well, read verse 13:

until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God…

Until” in this verse means we still have a ways to go! Continuing in verse 13:

. . . and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ . . .

There will always be room for growth into maturity in the Christian Church.

I am not making excuses or copping out against unity. I am not saying that DIS-unity is okay, but as long as our hearts and attitudes are reaching to attain unity, the nation, the Church, the family, etc., will not divide and fall as Christ mentioned in Matthew 25 above.

That is why it is honorable for us Christians to pray for good leaders in our country (1 Timothy 2:1-2) as we now are to pray for the leaders of the Church.

You may now ask this question. Pete, do you now believe in full-scale ecumenism?

Well, no. That topic is for a future blog, Lord willing.

LYRICS

There’s nowhere in the world that I would rather be
Than with you my love
And there’s nothing in the world that I would rather see
Than your smile my love

United We Stand album

Album

For united we stand
Divided we fall
And if our backs should ever be against the wall
We’ll be together, together, you and I

For united we stand
Divided we fall
And if our backs should ever be against the wall
We’ll be together, together, you and I

And if the world around you falls apart my love
Then I’ll still be here
And if the going gets too hard along the way
Just you call, I’ll hear

For united we stand
Divided we fall
And if our backs should ever be against the wall
We’ll be together, together, you and I

For united we stand
Divided we fall
And if our backs should ever be against the wall
We’ll be together, together, you and I
