Those Were The Days

Music HighwayMany of you have fond memories, more or less, of your early childhood days. You can remember when there was always something new to do and anticipate. For many of you, a family atmosphere of love and joy during your early years was inescapable.

There are others of you who cannot relate to what I just said, but if you do, count it a blessing. Several of you had a difficult childhood. That I understand. But, for very many of you, there were some “magical” days of laughter and mirth that you can, for the most part, reminisce as being rich with beauty and being carefree.

I have had a good share of good memories. I remember days when my family would be singing songs in the living room and my dad played along on his harmonica. I remember my mother dancing to Bob Dylan songs. Other times she would be humming the melody of Please Release Me by Engelbert Humperdinck as she did housework – I kid you not! How she loved that song without even caring about the lyrics will always be etched in my mind. Yes, as I look back, the air in my household was filled with music.  I thought those days would never end. Now they are gone and beautiful memories.

How about you? What are some of the days in your life you thought would never end?

Many of our fondest memories involve our favorite pet.

What do you remember in your younger days that you thought would never end? Would it be the aroma of oven-baked pie every weekend? Do family trips to the beach stir up memories? How about your grandfather’s jokes at the family dinner table? Did you enjoy playing card games with your aunt?

Of course, there are the good memories centering around the holidays. There was the excitement of high school rival football rallies or going to Broadway shows around Thanksgiving Day (US)? Do you have any warm reflections of singing Christmas carols with family, friends and coworkers? How about New Year’s Eve parties?

Those were happy days for you if you were blessed in that way. And you used to believe somehow those days of traditions and get-togethers would never end. Right?

But oh how the years have gone by. The celebrations of youthful energy are no longer. Your parents along with all or most of their friends, brothers and sisters have, one by one, past on. You now sigh and say, “Those were the days.”

Question: Are there any days like that yet ahead for you and me to enjoy in the future? Answer: The great news is a resounding, yes. There is coming a day of reunions with loving families. Because of Jesus Christ, a resurrection will occur. They will rise from their graves. They will embrace us once again.

More importantly, God’s presence of love will literally be seen and experienced everywhere and by everyone. And we will be living and growing wiser and wiser forever and a day, my friend. Those will be the days – days that will never end.

Those Were The Days  (1968)
lyrics – Gene Raskin
music – Boris Fomin
sung by – Mary Hopkin
genre – Folk
side B – Turn! Turn! Turn!

LYRICS:

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Mary Hopkin, 1970

Mary Hopkin in 1970

Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la…

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I’d see you in the tavern
We’d smile at one another and we’d say

Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la…

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me

Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la…

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we’re older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la…
