Dem Bones (Dry Bones)

Music HighwayEvery October 31st in the United States and elsewhere, a custom transpires mostly on behalf of and for children called, Halloween.

On that day, I would see miniature ghosts, goblins, witches and superheroes etc.,  knocking door-to-door asking for candy.

I can understand why many of you Christians would have objections with this annual activity. For, yes, there is very little seen on this day that is uplifting, wholesome or even inspiring.

As a matter of fact, most of it reveals a false imitation of God’s awesome purpose for mankind which is greatly unknown by many in the world today. Although a big topic, let me briefly explain.

Ezekiel"s Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones

Ezekiel’s Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones by Gustave Doré (1832–1883)

I believe that an angel, called Satan, exists. Jesus Christ, while on earth, dealt with him and his demons (other fallen angels) often. So, let me ask you this: If Satan had the power to create or to resurrect – bring back to life – that which has died, what would they look like?

Can you imagine what Satan would create if he were to have that ability? I believe Satan, if allowed, would bring into existence animals in horrible form in order to terrorize humanity on earth.  I believe Satan would resurrect and then keep as slaves, grotesque forms of animal creatures and other living things. What we often see many times portrayed on Halloween are mean-spirited and ugly caricatures walking about. That is what we would actually be facing every day if God had given Satan powers of this sort. But God has not given him any of this ability. Satan has indeed been limited by the Almighty. We should not fear or have any trepidation about anything that you see propagated on Halloween. It is all fictitious.

One costume that I often see on Halloween is that of skeletons. It is  laughable how combinations of linked, human bones being depicted can walk about the streets on its own power asking for sweets to eat.

SkeletonThis does, however, remind me of the Bible portrayal of a vision of an event yet in the future where bones will rise up from the dead and be “re-dressed”, so to speak, with muscle, ligament and flesh. It is found in Ezekiel 37:1-14. Why is this mentioned in the Bible? Answer: It was one of prophet Ezekiel’s mission on earth.

What were some of these missions, or purposes of Ezekiel? Quoting from Wikipedia’s article on the Book of Ezekiel:

The Book of Ezekiel is the third of the Major Prophets in the Tanakh and one of the major prophetic books in the Old Testament, following Isaiah and Jeremiah.

[1] According to the book itself, it records seven visions of the prophet Ezekiel, exiled in Babylon, during the 22 years 593-571 BCE, although it is the product of a long and complex history and does not necessarily preserve the very words of the prophet.

[2] The visions, and the book, are structured around three themes:
++(1) Judgment on Israel (chapters 1–24)
++(2) Judgment on the nations (chapters 25–32)
++(3) Future blessings for Israel (chapters 33–48)

[3] Its themes include the concepts of the presence of God, purity, Israel as a divine community, and individual responsibility to God.

In one particular vision, this prophet Ezekiel visited a valley of dried (indicating a death that occurred many years earlier) bones and cried over them. They became alive again by God’s power.

Bringing the dead back to life is one of the purposes Jesus Christ came to earth. His resurrection is a foretaste of what the Almighty God can – and will do – for mankind. Those who believe in Christ will be resurrected from the dead (if they had died) or be changed from flesh to spirit beings when He returns. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

Only God can bring the dead back to life. Fear not what our adversary, the Devil, can now do. Why? Because greater is He who is in you and me, Christian, than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Our hope is in a future life of immortality which Jesus Christ, our Lord, will give us. It will be an eternal life of beauty, joy and OUTGOING LOVE. He is The Resurrection and The Life. Therefore, let us keep our minds and hearts on Him – not on make-believe skeletons walking about.
