I Gotta Have Faith

Music HighwayAfter Christ rose from the dead and began showing Himself to His disciples, the first thing the disciple Thomas wanted was proof. He wanted absolute proof, via his senses of sight and touch, that Jesus was indeed alive- risen from the dead. Thomas, before he could believe on Him, wanted to feel the wounds inflicted on the body and hands of Jesus Christ. And because of his disbelief at that moment, that disciple has been dubbed ever since as “Doubting Thomas”.

But, is that not what this world demands today?
Does not society at large demand empirical proof,
material, measurable, visible proof that God exists?
Does not this world want a sign, like Jesus showing
up in front of them, before they can believe?

Importantly, however, what all unbelievers of today
lack is one thing. They lack having the Holy Spirit
of God. So did the disciple of Jesus, Thomas, lack the
Holy Spirit and therefore refused to believe (as did
all the other disciples) until the risen Christ met him.
The disciple, Thomas, probably would never have
believed without God’s help. The same has been the
case with all of humanity ever since.

Faith DoubtIf Jesus had not first shown Himself to Mary, and then later to Peter, John and the rest of the disciples, they would have all doubted, just as Thomas did, that Christ was alive again.

So, I ask you Christians, why not go easy on Thomas? Why continue labeling him, “Doubting Thomas” when, there, but by the grace of God, are we!

Why do you Christians believe in Christ today?
You never touched Him or visibly seen Him in
person – at least 99.99% of you anyway. I state
that percentage because some of you may, let
me emphasize, CLAIM, to have met Christ, just
as the apostle Paul did in Acts 9:1-7.  But I doubt it
(pun or whatever, intended). I believe Christians
who relay to others to have actually seen Jesus in
person, only saw Him in their dreams. This is
nothing new. Christianity down through history
has seen its share of Christian mysticism. (Click link).

But, in the ancient world, especially as it related to
Israel, it was God who first revealed Himself to man.
He first revealed Himself to Abraham and Jacob
to help them first believe.

God introduces Himself to Moses using a burning bush.

God first introduced Himself to Moses as a burning bush. He very likely did not touch it. Please meditate on Luke 24:13-32 – especially verse 32. Also, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit first introduced Himself to the world as flames of fire (Acts 2:1-4).

Christ revealed Himself as God incarnate to the disciples and to all those He came in contact – as flesh – in the land of Israel as a healer and forgiver of sin during the time of the Roman Empire. He suffered, died and was buried. And then He rose from His grave, He was resurrected. He visibly approached Mary first as well as to all of the other disciples afterwards.

Soon, however, came the Holy Spirit who is now working first among all those God is calling. The Holy Spirit is key to first believing and not doubting the reality of Jesus Christ.

One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is faith (Galatians 5:22). In order to have faith,
you must first believe God as He first calls
and deals with you to believe in Christ. This
allows the Holy Spirit to strengthen, encourage
and comfort you into faith afterwards.

The YouTube video below is the type of song Thomas could have sung (altering the lyrics) when he demanded to first touch the body of Christ before he, Thomas, would believe on Him having risen. It was not about first having faith on God or anything like that.

Thomas’ heart did indeed “sink onto the floor” when he saw Christ die on the cross. Therefore, Thomas wanted more.  And he got more. Yes, he received physical evidence to believe Christ had risen from the dead, but he soon afterwards received greater, spiritual manifestations, and the strength of faith on the day of Pentecost.

After Pentecost, Thomas then continued forward and witnessed to the world Jesus Christ – NOT a message that you gotta first have faith in Him in order to be saved.

And since then, it has been through the work of the Holy Spirit, where many have been added to the community of believers. That work of the Holy Spirit continues today.

Cart before the horse

Many Christians have it backwards (the cart before the horse). They believe that an unbeliever must first have faith in order to believe in Christ. Belief and faithfulness are two different subjects.

If you are not a Christian and are seeking God, put away the foolish notion that you need to actually see, touch, and hear God first. Throw aside your pride and stubbornness out the door.

Come to Christ, just as you are.

Why? You may be starting to realize this, but God
may have already approached you first and provided
enough for you to believe His Son, Jesus Christ.

LYRICS:

Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has got a body like you, uhh

But I’ve got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too

Album

Album

Oh but I
Need some time off from that emotion
Time to pick my heart up off the floor
Oh when that love comes down
Without devotion
Well it takes a strong man, baby
But I’m showing you the door

‘Cause I gotta have faith
I gotta faith
Because I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith
I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith

Baby
I know you’re asking me to stay
Say please, please, please don’t go away
You say I’m giving you the blues
Maybe
You mean every word you say
Can’t help but think of yesterday
And another who tied me down to lover boy rules

Before this river
Becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
Oh baby I reconsider
My foolish notion
Well I need someone to hold me
But I wait for something more

Yes I’ve gotta have faith
Umm I gotta faith
Because I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith
I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith

(interlude)
I just got to wait
Because I got to have faith
I gotta have faith
I gotta, gotta, gotta have faith

Before this river
Becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
Oh baby I reconsider
My foolish notion
Well I need someone to hold me
But I wait for something more

‘Cause I’ve gotta have faith
Umm I gotta faith
Because I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith
I gotta to have faith, a faith, a faith
