All I Really Want To Do

Music HighwayWhat was God up to when He created Adam and Eve? I mean, He had already created thousands if not millions of angels to be around Him. Right? Were they perfect? I believe so. Just because one-third of them decided to rebel against God did not mean they were imperfect to begin with.

When Lucifer rebelled it was because wickedness was in him (Ezekiel 28:14-15). How did that happen? Did God create imperfect, evil
beings? No. Did God place sinfulness
into Lucifer which caused him to mutiny
against God (Isaiah 14:12-15) and be
renamed, Satan? No. Lucifer was created
perfect. Philosophical discussions can
go on and on here.

But God then created human beings. He was
again pleased with what He did. Once again,
what He caused into existence was very good.
Right? Of course! But because Adam and Eve
decided to disobey did that mean they were
actually not made perfect? No, again, what God
created was very good. Perfect.

So why did God create these beings – human
beings – who would also disobey and soon even reject
Him? Was it because God wanted something unique?

I believe so. This time God wanted special relationships
to exist between Him and what He created.

How can you tell this was what He wants? Answer: By
reading the Bible. This is a huge topic! Notice one thing
that Jesus Christ said.

Jesus expressed God’s desire for a relationship when He
called His disciples, friends.

In John 15:15, Jesus told His disciples…

No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you (NKJV)

The angels that God created, were they His friends? Not really, God never called any of His created, angelic beings by that term. They were His “ministering spirits” (Hebrews 1:14). They were created to serve God and man, not to befriend anyone.

But, let us look at ourselves for a minute. Is it not
true that, on the human plane, much of what man has
created was for the purpose of serving himself?  The
automobile is an example of a servant, so is the
telephone, as well as the airplane, all were invented
to serve mankind.

The computer was brought into existence to serve man, not be man’s friend. Being “user-friendly” is not much of a friendship. If a robot (an advanced computer in my opinion) uses artificial intelligence would it become our friend or still be a servant? I do not know. I have watched far too many science fiction movies to give you a straight forward answer at this time. Time may tell what future robots will become for us.

But Jesus, who is God our Creator in the flesh, was calling His disciples, friends! The Creator of man was iniating a friendship relationship toward what He created. That is just awesome that God would want that!

But is not a marriage relationship strong enough between God and man? Yes, Jesus will one day marry His bride, the Church. We Christians will be spirit beings when this occurs, however. But now we are flesh and blood.

In the meantime, marriage unions  within the human race are between a man and a woman and supposedly between the best of friends becoming one flesh. But this marriage relationship requires a vow. A marriage contract. A wedding vow. A covenant.

So, it was (and still is) with God. Ever since the fall of man in the garden of Eden, He has offered His hand in friendship toward man. He has wanted us human beings, His creation, to be His friends. How? He did so through what are called covenants between Him and man.

I) Many Bible students and scholars say that after the flood God established a covenant for mankind to never destroy the earth with flooding again (Genesis 8:21). The rainbow was the sign of that covenant.

II) God established a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12:1-7 and Genesis 15:1-18.

III) God established a covenant through Moses
based on the law (Exodus chapters 19 – 23).

IV) God made a covenant with King David about
his throne (2 Samuel 7).

V) He established a New Covenant prophesied
in Jeremiah 31:31-40 and Ezekiel 36:22-37. It
was ratified by the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Here are two amazing scriptures to consider…
Hebrews 9:15 and Matthew 26:28.

This New Covenant is similar to most of the
other ones in that it still revolves around
a Kingdom people being children and co-rulers
with God. Please also meditate on this! Wow!

But why friendship? An important verse, in my opinion, regarding this is in Provebs 18:24…

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (NIV)

Jesus called His disciples friends. He started the conversation. And He is now calling us to be His disciples and His friends. He will be closer than any brother (or sister) in your immediate family – indeed far closer than any acquaintance this world has to offer. But why friendship?

I am sure many of you have read essays, heard speeches and sermons on what makes a true friend. Terms such as loyalty, trust, commitment, honesty and sacrifice are a few words that come forth from this topic. That is the kind of friend we have in Jesus; that is the friend God wants to be with us.

How about you and me? How can we be His friend? He will show us. We can indeed shake hands with Almighty God – our Father, our Creator, our Bridegroom-to-be, our friend. That I pray will be what you will experience now and always.

genre – Pop, folk rock
side B – “I’m Gonna Love You”
album – All I Really Want to Do

Now I ain’t lookin’ to compete with you
Beat on, cheat on, mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy, mystify you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

Now I ain’t lookin’ to fight with you
Frighten you or uptighten you
Drag you down or drain you down
Chain you down or bring you down

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

I ain’t lookin’ to block you up
Dock or rock or lock you up
Analyze you, categorize you
Finalize or advertise you

Vinyl, 45 rpm, source:

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

I don’t want to straight-face you
Race or chase or track or trace you
Or disgrace you or displace you
Or define you or confine you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you

Now I don’t want to meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or dissect you
Or inspect you or reject you

All I really want to do
Is baby, be friends with you
Baby, be friends with you
